You have options!
Deciding whether to parent or to make an adoption plan is probably the toughest decision you’ll ever have to make. We will provide you with caring, compassionate, unbiased, and confidential counseling and support so you can make the best decision for you and for your baby.
Three Kinds of Adoption Planning
Open Adoption: You’ll share your identity with the prospective adoptive family, and they’ll share theirs with you. You choose the level of future contact you want. Interactions can include letters, e-mails, telephone calls, and even visits.
Semi-Open Adoption: You can choose to share non-identifying information with the prospective adoptive family. MAA will assist with these interactions so that your privacy and theirs will be protected. Regular updates and pictures will be available for you through MAA. This is the most common type of adoption.
Closed Adoption: You and the prospective adoptive parents have no identifying information about each other. You will not see a picture or know the names of the adoptive parents. MAA does not encourage closed adoptions since they don’t provide any benefit to you, your child, or the adoptive family. All MAA families are required to provide regular updates and photographs of the child, but it’s your choice regarding receiving this information.

The TRUTH about Adoption
FALSE:
A truly caring mother would never give up her child.
TRUE:
A mother who unselfishly creates
an adoption plan doesn’t “give up” her child.
Adoption is a caring and responsible process
that is as natural and loving as parenting.
FALSE:
My child will hate me.
TRUE:
You gave your child the gift of life and put
your child’s needs first. This will be explained
to your child as he/she grows up.
FALSE:
Adoption is a reckless and irresponsible
answer to an unplanned pregnancy.
TRUE:
You must be a strong and responsible
person to choose adoption. You should not feel guilty for considering adoption; being a parent
is not your deserved consequence for
your unplanned pregnancy.
FALSE:
Adopted children grow up with more
problems than children who aren’t adopted.
TRUE:
Studies show that adopted children
do as well or better than their peers.
FALSE:
Nobody can love a child as much
as a biological parent.
TRUE:
Even though biological parents hold tremendous love for their child, it’s not a matter of biology.
An adoptive couple’s love for your child is the result of much effort and desire to be a parent.
Adoptive parents realize how blessed they are, and their love and devotion to the child is very real.
FALSE:
I’ll never hear from my child again or
know how they’re doing.
TRUE:
This was true in the past. As a birth mother
today, you can create your own adoption plan,
select and meet the adoptive parents,
and choose to stay in touch
while your child is growing up
